Three things we learned this quarter

operationsengineering

Every quarter we sit down with the engineering leads, the twelve warehouse managers, and whoever in sales is willing to be honest, and we ask one question: what did we get wrong, and what did it teach us? Here are the three answers that came up most often between May and July.

1. A magnet can be too strong

Our new 40-series industrial magnet passed every spec on the bench and then failed the only test that matters: it would not let go of the forklift. We re-rated it, added a keeper plate to the packaging, and rewrote the datasheet so the first line is now the holding force. The lesson was not about magnets. It was about leading with the number the customer actually needs to know.

2. The fastest warehouse is the one that walks least

The Tulsa warehouse improved its dispatch time by eleven percent this quarter without hiring anyone or buying a single conveyor. They moved the 200 highest-velocity SKUs to the front of the building and stopped there. Every other warehouse is copying it by the end of September.

3. Patience is a product feature

One customer waited nine weeks for a custom fabrication we quoted at four. They stayed because we told them the truth every Friday. We would rather have shipped on time, but if we can’t, a straight answer on schedule turns out to be the next best part we make.
